The museum houses and displays historic locomotives, carriages and rail memorabilia. The Canberra Railway Museum is also the home to both Australia’s oldest and largest operating steam locomotives. The oldest, 1210, was built in 1878 whilst the Beyer-Garratt 6029 steam locomotive weighs 265 tons, the heaviest locomotive class to run in Australia.

Throughout the year the Museum runs heritage rail trips and tours, from regular short shuttle trips to Fyshwick, to steam hauled trains to Bungendore, to long distance trips to Sydney and beyond, see website for timetable.

Railmotor Rides from Canberra Railway Museum to Fyshwick normally operate on the second and fourth Sunday of every month. (subject to operational circumstances). Departure times are half-hourly; the first run at 11:00 and the last run at 14:30.
